Small Business Spotlight: Beam & Barre
Next up in our series, we are bringing it close to home. We are proud to feature one of our own local small businesses with whom we work, Beam & Barre. While they are always on point(e), they are definitely going the extra mile to make sure customers have what they need during this challenging time.
Who are you?
My name is Cara Milo and I’m the owner of Beam & Barre in Greenwich, CT.
What is your business?
Beam & Barre is a dance and gymnastics retail store, selling everything from pointe shoes and tutus to gymnastic leotards and workout apparel.
Why and when did you start this business?
I bought Beam & Barre 6 years ago. The store has been a Greenwich staple for over 40 years and I worked there for about 8 years when the owner decided she wanted to retire. I loved working at the store and decided that shifting from ballet teacher who worked retail part time to becoming the store owner was the challenge and change I needed.

What is your FAVORITE part of your job as an entrepreneur/business owner?
My absolute favorite part is watching a little girl put on their first ballet slippers and dance around with the biggest smile on their face. Seeing their joy is absolutely priceless and makes me so happy that I can be a part of that. My other favorite part is working with my employees! They are my second family and the store is my second home and they make work so much fun.
What is the most DIFFICULT part of your job as an entrepreneur/business owner?
The most difficult part for me is all the different hats you have to wear as a small business owner. You’re not just the owner, you’re in charge of HR, billing, accounting, IT, marketing, social media, etc. I had to learn quickly how to do all of these things and do them all while keeping up with day to day sales and customer orders. On top of all of that, I bring my two young daughters with me to the store so it’s a lot of juggling.
What SHOES are you wearing right now (no judgement!)?
Slippers because working from home does not require real shoes!
How are you managing during this COVID19 pandemic?
Honestly, I feel extremely busy! I know a lot of people are thinking to themselves, “What am I going to do with all this time at home?”, but I (and I’m sure a lot of small business owners feel this way) have kicked into high gear. We are a business that relies on customers coming into the store and now that people can’t do that, my days are filled with figuring out ways to keep the business going, navigating a world of selling dancewear while social distancing, and making lots and lots of deliveries.

What’s one thing you’re doing during this COVID19 that’s helping to keep your sanity?
I get outside every day and play in the yard with my girls. It’s a simple thing that makes me forget about the craziness happening right now, at least for a little while.
